Brown cheese and misty landscape

This is the most perfect morning bite.

Warm hearty breakfast rolls with soft Norwegian brown cheese.

The moment I land from a trip abroad I dive into the fridge to fish out the brown cheese.

To me it is infused with the essence of my beloved Norway.

It brings back sweet childhood memories of afternoons having fallen asleep in the hay as the sun licked my face and my grandmother, mother and an old family friend stirred away in the log house to make brown cheese from fresh goat milk.

These days the sun is gone, the old log home where they made this brown cheese is closed, but my love for this caramel-like cheese lingers on.

So much of my childhood is filled with wonderful food memories.

Cooking with my beloved mother in the kitchen, sitting on the bench dangling my feet and observing her work magic. Or baking in my grandmothers small kitchen on hot summer days.

The absolutely most wonderful food related memories are the berry picking and jam making ones from beautiful fall days hiking the mountains around our old family log cabin seeking the best berries.

My grandmother is know  for picking hundreds of liters of wild raspberries, lingon berries, blueberries, blackberries and cloudberries.

In the evening we rinsed the berries for leaf and stem by hand while talking and laughing in the tiny log cabin kitchen.

The wood stove worked overtime to keep up with us and before we went to bed that night warm jam was served with milk on the side.

Delicious, delicious memories:)

In this world of mass produced and fast paced, I long for the more quiet days of my childhood.

I hope one day to be able to bring up a little family the same way I was, with time to sit down and eat together, to talk, to walk and to work together.

Those genuine and heartfelt moments of togetherness is in my opinion of such big importance in creating lasting friendships, enduring love and wholeheartedness.

So as the days get darker and darker and there’s seems like light will never return, I think of Victor Hugo and sweet berry picking memories, and cling to the promise that this too shall pass;)

  1. I just love everything about this post, the way of life you remember, the pace of life I long for, the beautiful and delicious brown cheese that came into my life via precious Norwegian friends (and they too make litres of jam in the summer, and freeze it it eat all year). I think I must have viking blood, it all seems so close to my heart even though I am English! Thanks for the dreamy photos and words…

I just discovered your blog through pinterest. It is divine. I’m American, living in Texas and your world appears dreamy and otherworldly. I love this post as I too hope that my young daughter remembers the experiences of simple family time together – surrounded by food made and offered with love. Warm jam with milk before bedtime…perfection.
