Cooking: Rustic Norwegian food

Last weekend when I was up at our families 200 year old cottage in the Norwegian mountains, cooking was charmingly different than usual.

Since this place has no electricity our only source of heat in the kitchen is the wood stove.

I must admit it was quite a challenge to remember to keep the fire going after I’d lit the logs and I’d started stirring in a pot.

But once I got the hang of it I surprisingly stared loving the more rustic style of cooking.

The tric is to slow down and plan ahead.

To be able to make a lunchtime Rømmegrøt

(sour-cream porridge) that is very traditional in Norway in the summer, this is how it broke down:

- Chop wood  and fill up our wood-basket to not run out mid cooking.

- Hike to the family spring for ice cold mountain water.

- Pick up some cold milk, butter and sour-cream that we keep in a bucket immersed in the closest stream for cooling.

- Turn on the old battery run radio to a local station for funky cooking tunes.

- Build a fire in the wood stove and keep feeding it.

Then I could start the actual cooking;)

I felt so incredibly rustic chic as I stood there stirring away in the porridge while tending to the fire;)

The delicious smell of Rømmegrøt soon filled the mountain cottage with such sweetness. My friend was reading away by the window and I thought to myself that I could get used to this slower way of life.

Do you want to learn how to make this porridge?

Tomorrow I’ll post the recipe for you. It’s so easy and to me the perfect rustic comfort food there is.

Now, I have many things to share with you, but those exact things I am so dying to tell you more about are the things that are completely taking up all my time lately.

I’ve even had to postpone my upcoming second trip to Ireland!

I’ll say this much, it includes a workshop in August, some fun news in regards to my jewelry design and a little fashion-shoot for the fall!

Can’t wait to tell you more;)

See you tomorrow!
